RWP Video #5:

Twitter Music Promotion Introduction

Twitter music promotion plays an important part in your overall web presence as an independent artist and the video below introduces you to Twitter should you not know it by now.

Twitter is a networking site which allows you to post messages of less than 140 characters at a time. You can follow and be followed by other Twitter members. You'll see the posts (called "tweets") of the people you follow, and people who follow you will see your posts.

So, how do you do the Twitter music promotion thing?

You can find many articles about this subject when you Google for "twitter for musicians", or similar phrases.

Here's what I think you should focus on when you use Twitter as an independent music artist...

Grow your tribe - Twitter allows you to grow a following fast because anyone who uses Twitter can follow your posts, you don't need to approve followers.

Your best strategy to grow your Twitter following is to be personable and to interact with other Twitter members because people will ignore constant broadcast style self-promotion.

Remember, you don't add value directly to your own business and brand when you post on Twitter, so you want to use Twitter to get attention which you then should channel to your own offerings. A subscriber on your own mailing list is much more valuable to your business than a Twitter follower, so link back to your main web site.

Get to know your tribe - You can follow back the people who follow you to see what they post about. This gives you insight into the things your tribe members or potential tribe members are interested in.

You can use the information you receive to develop creative strategies for promotion of your music, brand and business through channels other than the usual music promotion sites and services.

Get direct, low-cost feedback - You can ask your followers questions on Twitter which means it serves you as an effective and low-cost part of your market research.

You can ask questions to get feedback on new tracks you release, determine the best price for your products and services, find out where people would like to see you perform and discover other places your tribe hangs out.

Twitter is a simple idea and a very basic platform which, when used creatively gives you the ability to change the world (no jokes!).

Here's the information you want to enter on your Twitter profile...

    What others have to say...

"Thank you for your help with our web strategy and social media presence. The integrated setup of the web site and our social profiles you helped us establish makes life so much easier. The buzz so far has been great and just keeps growing!" - Gareth, The Commercial Hippies / Nano Records thecommercialhippies.com

"As the owner of a music studio, I have found this site to be extremely beneficial to musicians at any stage of development. Way to go, Marius!" - Lynne, may-studio-music-lessons.com

"Marius has a very informative site on how to be a self-managing musician, and he takes the time to get back to you if you've got questions. He's a cool guy!" - Nate Maingard, Musician twitter.com/NateMaingard

"It refreshing in so many ways to find something that's the truth and not just some "sign here pay this and tomorrow you're famous" website!! Marius has lent direction in gray areas for The Brokekings and certainly its been the most honest approach in getting our brand from our hard-drive to our tribe's ears." - Cliff Barns, The Brokekings http://thebrokekings.bandcamp.com

"Yes, your site is great. I devoured all of it, watched all the Vids because you cover all the important current marketing strategies a band/artist should be doing. I totally agree with your angle on things, especially the way the old music biz paradigm is crumbling away and there are new ways for all of us Artists to empower ourselves." Paul Abrahams, The Reels
