Musician Insurance - Are you covered?

Fragile Sticker

So, here's the deal with musician insurance and the independent music artist...

As an independent music artist you are in charge of your music, business and life. You are also free to make your own decisions in line with your values.

Power and freedom comes however with responsibility.

It's simple. You have to watch your own back because nobody else will!

I have created this page about insurance because many independent artists overlook this important matter.

Now, I'm obviously no insurance expert. I provide this page to you for informational purposes, as a starting point for your own research.

I suggest you look into the matter carefully and then choose the cover which best suits your particular needs and budget.

You'll probably need two basic types of insurance...

1) Instrument Cover

You've invested a lot in your gear so musical instrument cover makes sense, especially due to the fragile nature of most instruments and equipment.

You'll discover specialized insurance companies exist which cater to the needs of musicians.

Here are two companies I found which you may want to take a look at...

In the US: Music Pro Insurance

In the UK: Music Guard

2) Health Cover

"Plan for the worst and expect the best" I think the saying goes.

This is one of those things you don't always realize you need until you need it most. You can minimize the possibility of unforeseen financial setbacks due to medical issues with basic health insurance.

You will hopefully never have to call it in though it does come with a certain peace of mind.

Here are some resources you may find helpful...

Do you use your own car or van to get to gigs? I suggest you also look at breakdown and road-side recovery services and the different types of vehicle insurance available to you.

Please note again that I do not endorse any of the services on this page as I'm not knowledgeable enough to make such judgments. Use your common sense and consult with experts when choosing a package to suit your needs.

I trust you've found this page helpful and will update it whenever I find more useful and relevant musician insurance information for you.

All the best,
Marius van Dyk

What others have to say...

"Thank you for your help with our web strategy and social media presence. The integrated setup of the web site and our social profiles you helped us establish makes life so much easier. The buzz so far has been great and just keeps growing!" - Gareth, The Commercial Hippies / Nano Records thecommercialhippies.com

"As the owner of a music studio, I have found this site to be extremely beneficial to musicians at any stage of development. Way to go, Marius!" - Lynne, may-studio-music-lessons.com

"Marius has a very informative site on how to be a self-managing musician, and he takes the time to get back to you if you've got questions. He's a cool guy!" - Nate Maingard, Musician twitter.com/NateMaingard

"It refreshing in so many ways to find something that's the truth and not just some "sign here pay this and tomorrow you're famous" website!! Marius has lent direction in gray areas for The Brokekings and certainly its been the most honest approach in getting our brand from our hard-drive to our tribe's ears." - Cliff Barns, The Brokekings http://thebrokekings.bandcamp.com

"Yes, your site is great. I devoured all of it, watched all the Vids because you cover all the important current marketing strategies a band/artist should be doing. I totally agree with your angle on things, especially the way the old music biz paradigm is crumbling away and there are new ways for all of us Artists to empower ourselves." Paul Abrahams, The Reels
