The End of Boring Backups: Claim your free 25 gigs of offsite storage right now. Hurry, though...

You probably know by now that the loss of DAW projects or audio files can reduce even the most seasoned pro to the point of tears. Data loss just plain sucks.

Now, the only cure when it comes to losing data is obviously prevention. So, most studio owners back up to external hard-drives and this is all good apart from the fact that...

... hard drives can fail and are vulnerable to physical damage.

Once data is lost from a hard-drive giving up the ghost it's pretty much gone. Zap! Ouch!

Plus, backing up to hard drives manually takes discipline and is so boring compared to working on a production. So, I've been looking out for a file transfer and backup solution tailored for musicians and studio owners. I couldn't find any. Until now...

Enter Gobbler...

I received an e-mail from Andrew who works for a new company called Gobbler. Presto!

What's Gobbler all about? Backups tailored to the needs of audio professionals, yes...

"Gobbler is a backup, transfer, and organizational tool for managing audio project files and assets."

The software integrates with your DAW and runs live in the background while you work. Once you are set up it automatically keeps your files backed up. It also allows you to easily share and access your projects and files across the Web.

I've just opened an account and will let you know how I find working with in in the long run once I've had some time to test it properly.

I wanted to let you know about it right now however because until December 7th, 2011 you can claim 25 gigs of Gobbler space for free. So, I suggest you take advantage of this offer right now to not miss out!

I get a few extra gigs of space for referring people so please use the above link to sign up. You can then refer the service to other people to earn extra storage on top of the 25 gigs for yourself.

I have an intuition that Gobbler is right on the money and will become huge. There's a real need for this solution in the pro audio realms.

So, get your free account now before it takes off!

All the best,
Marius

P.S. The software currently only works for Mac. They are working on a Windows version so fingers crossed that will be available soon.

Tune your room...

It's simple: You cannot mix when you cannot hear what you're working on.

You need to tune your room to get an accurate image when you listen back.

This quest can be more tricky than it seems at first glance as you probably know.

I found this episode of Pensado's Place which is great to watch should you want to tune your room for optimum monitoring.

Watch it right now below...

A promising new product has just come up on my radar.

What is it? A new magic sound box from the company Dark Matter Audio named the DMA1.

They call it a Smart Audio Hub and it can be used as a...

... multi-track recorder.
... effects processor.
... drum machine.
... sampler.
... looper.
... and more!

It will also allow you to download apps like you would with a phone and also has open architecture.

Check out the introduction video for more info...

It's not available yet and I couldn't see a price on the company web site so for now we'll just have to wait in anticipation. ;-)

First, work. Here's a post with some great pointers for when you're working on your final mixdown...

On a lighter note, the musician community over at MTT has also been talking about making money this week. You know what that means...

... the debate got explosive!

Check out this Hypebot post which links to the main MTT articles.

And, last but not least, still on the topic of moolah. Is your music being played on Internet radio or other online channels? Are you registered with SoundExchange?

Have you collected your royalties? ;-)

Watch this...

You may not have enough mics. You may not have enough mic inputs. You may not want 21 drum tracks.

Fret not! Enter the Recorderman microphone technique...

Now, granted that won't get your tracks the Eddie Kramer sound and Metallica might frown down from up on high. Who cares, right? ;-)

It's still a sweet little ninja-skill for your recording bag of tricks.

You may enjoy this great talk in which David Byrne looks at the way we make music to suit the environments in which the music will be played.

The idea, while common sense when you think about it, has some interesting implications for how we make music.

I was checking out some tweets while bouncing down a synth track when I came across this great post by Bob Lefsetz.

The post contains some excellent suggestions for musicians in the new music business. The two closing paragraphs sum it up nicely methinks...

"We're never going back to the sales figures of yore. Not because of theft' but because no one can get that kind of mindshare.

But you can get some traction. If you're willing to work really hard, continuously, always leading with your music." Bob Lefsetz

Click the link below now to read the full post. It's packed full of nutritious music business advice! ;-)

All the best,
Win a Cyber PR Campaign!

I'm excited to share some news with you today!

How would you like to win a PR campaign worth $1,595 from Cyber PR?

The charming Ariel Hyatt sent me an e-mail this morning in which she announced a new contest for music artists.

Here's how it works...

1. Read the Music Success in Nine Weeks e-book. Please purchase the e-book via my affiliate link here as this means I can get a small share of the sale for recommending it.

2. Send an e-mail to ariel@arielpublicity.com with a link to your Blog. Use "MSi9W Blogging Contest Entry" as your subject line.

3. Start with week one in the e-book and Blog about it as you go through the process in the e-book. You need to create 9 entries, in other words, one for each of the 9 weeks in the e-book. You can use Facebook, MySpace or Blogger if you don't have a Blog.

4. CyberPR staff will judge the entries and the artist who learns the most and advances the most will win a full Headliner Cyber PR campaign from CyberPR, worth $1,595. The campaign will get your music to bloggers, podcasters and radio DJs. It will also help you organize your social media presence.

*Judging Starts TODAY* *Judging closes March 10, 2010*

You'll find my honest review of Music Success in Nine Weeks here should you want more information about the e-book before you buy.

You can read the <a href="http://cyberpr.squarespace.com/journal/2009/12/10/take-the-music-success-in-nine-weeks-blogging-challenge.html" target=_"new">announcement from Cyber PR here for full details.

Thank you in advance for using my affiliate link to purchase the e-book!

I wish you all the best for the contest. Now, make some history Renegade!
